Cubs 2, Giants 1: Hector Rondon worked around a pair of hits in the ninth inning and Anthony Rizzo's two-run homer from two nights earlier held up as host Chicago won a game that began Tuesday.

The Cubs led 2-0 after 4 1/2 innings when heavy rain moved in Tuesday and, coupled with the grounds crew's failure to properly tarp the infield, left the field unplayable. After a delay of more than 4 1/2 hours, the game was declared final, but Major League Baseball upheld San Francisco's protest Wednesday.

The restart also was delayed by rain, but the Giants quickly cut the margin in half on pinch-hitter Joe Panik's RBI single in the sixth. Panik and Brandon Crawford hit back-to-back one-out singles against Rondon in the ninth to move the tying run into scoring position, but Rondon struck out Gregor Blanco and made a nice play to knock down Pagan's come-backer and throw him out at first to earn his 19th save.

Tsuyoshi Wada (3-1), who allowed six hits over five scoreless frames before the rain came Tuesday, was credited with the win, while Giants starter Ryan Vogelsong (7-9) took the loss. Rizzo's two-run homer in the first inning Tuesday - his 29th of the season - accounted for all the scoring for Chicago, and the All-Star first baseman had two of the Cubs' three hits.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Giants were trying to become the first team to win a protested contest since the Pirates beat the Dodgers at Forbes Field in 1948. … The official time of the rain delay was 6 hours, 31 minutes, though it spanned nearly 48 hours. … The Cubs placed SS Starlin Castro on the bereavement list and recalled 2B Logan Watkins from Triple-A Iowa.
