Cubs 4, Mets 1: Anthony Rizzo had two hits – including a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning – and rookie Kyle Hendricks tossed seven strong frames to win his fourth straight start as Chicago split a four-game set in New York.

Hendricks (5-1) had little trouble keeping the struggling Mets’ offense in check, limiting them to one run on three hits before Hector Rondon got the final three outs in the ninth for his 18th save. Javier Baez added a two-run shot – his fifth home run in 14 career games – and Luis Valbuena, who entered Monday in a 2-for-35 slump over his last 12 games, singled three times and drove in a run as the Cubs took the season series 5-2.

Lucas Duda launched his 22nd homer as the Mets became the first team in 10 years to be held to four hits or fewer in five straight games, tying the team record set in 1963 and 2004. Buddy Carlyle (1-1) gave up the go-ahead run - his first run allowed in 11 relief outings since July 8 - to take his first loss with the Mets.

Carlos Torres, who was named an emergency starter in place of Bartolo Colon after making a brief relief appearance in Sunday’s 2-1 loss, struck out the side in the first and escaped a bases-loaded jam in the fourth. Duda broke open the scoreless draw in the bottom half, sending a 1-2 sinker over the middle of the plate into the Cubs’ bullpen.

Torres departed after allowing three singles over five scoreless frames, but Dana Eveland surrendered a leadoff double to Rizzo in the sixth and Valbuena game-tying RBI single two batters later. Carlyle retired the next six hitters until Rizzo belted a 1-1 sinker over the fence in right-center and Baez added insurance in the ninth when he hammered a 1-0 fastball from Jenrry Mejia into the second deck in left.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Colon was scratched from Monday’s scheduled start after he flew home to the Dominican Republic to be with his hospitalized mother. Manager Terry Collins said the Mets will place Colon on the bereavement list Tuesday. … Hendricks has posted a 1.23 ERA during his winning streak. … Daniel Murphy led off the ninth with a double, giving New York its second extra-base hit and ended the team’s six-game streak of producing one extra-base hit or less.
