Cubs 6, Reds 4 (12): Luis Valbuena ripped a two-run triple with two outs in the 12th inning as visiting Chicago salvaged the finale of a five-game series versus Cincinnati.

Valbeuna sent a 3-1 fastball from J.J. Hoover (1-6) toward the warning track, causing right fielder Skip Schumaker to crash into the wall. Arismendy Alcantara and Starlin Castro scored before Valbuena was ruled out at the plate to end the 12th, and Blake Parker (1-0) struck out three in two innings to secure the win.

Alcantara slapped a two-run RBI double for his first career major-league hit and added a sacrifice fly for the Cubs, who snapped a season-high six-game skid. Alcantara, who finished with four hits, also scored on Castro's RBI single to forge a 4-4 tie in the eighth inning.

Ryan Ludwick homered among his three hits and drove in a pair for the Reds, who learned that injured second baseman Brandon Phillips will undergo surgery on Friday for a torn left thumb ligament and will be sidelined at least six weeks. Speaking of injury, starting pitcher Homer Bailey exited in the sixth with pain in the patellar tendon of his right knee.

Ludwick ripped an RBI single to highlight a three-run first inning and deposited a 1-0 changeup from Kyle Hendricks over the wall in left in the third to give Cincinnati a 4-1 lead. Alcantara trimmed the deficit with a two-run double to left in the fifth and scored after Castro sent an offering from Jonathan Broxton into center field.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Chicago 1B Anthony Rizzo, who won the National League's final All-Star vote, took issue with LHP Aroldis Chapman after the fireballer was routinely pitching inside in the ninth inning - causing the benches to clear. Chapman fanned RF Justin Ruggiano earlier in the frame, marking his 39th consecutive appearance with at least one strikeout - tying Bruce Sutter's major-league record for a reliever. ... Recalled from Triple-A Iowa prior to the game, Hendricks yielded three runs in the first inning before settling down in his major-league debut. The 24-year-old permitted four runs on five hits and struck out seven in six innings in a no-decision. ... Bailey departed after throwing a 1-2 pitch to Castro to lead off the sixth for Cincinnati, which wraps up its first half of the season by opening a three-game set versus visiting Pittsburgh on Friday. Chicago hosts a three-game series against Atlanta.
