Tigers 7, White Sox 2: Nick Castellanos belted a three-run homer to highlight his career-high four-RBI performance and All-Star Max Scherzer tossed seven solid innings as host Detroit snapped its four-game losing streak.
All-Star Victor Martinez, Torii Hunter and J.D. Martinez each added an RBI single for the American League Central-leading Tigers, who scored six times in the first inning to match their sum total of the previous four contests. Hunter finished with three hits and scored twice while All-Star Miguel Cabrera and J.D. Martinez each had two singles in the victory.
Rookie Jose Abreu recorded a single in the seventh inning for the White Sox as the All-Star extended his hitting streak to 19 games. Hector Noesi (5-8) was thwarted in his bid to win his career-best third straight start, permitting six runs on 10 hits in six innings.
A 42-minute rain delay did little to cool off Detroit, which sent 11 batters to the plate in the first inning. After three consecutive RBI singles staked the Tigers to a 3-0 lead, Castellanos doubled the advantage in short order as he deposited a first-pitch fastball from Noesi over the wall in right field for his seventh homer.
Scherzer (13-3) pulled into a tie with St. Louis' Adam Wainwright for most wins in the majors after allowing one run on five hits as he improved to 4-0 in as many starts versus Chicago this season. The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner yielded a sacrifice fly by Dayan Viciedo in the seventh and Al Alburquerque served up Adam Dunn's solo homer in the ninth before sealing the win.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Castellanos returned to the lineup after missing Tuesday's contest with a bruised right index finger. ... Detroit rookie SS Eugenio Suarez sat out with tightness in his lower back. Andrew Romine went 1-for-4 in place of Suarez, who exited Tuesday's game after injuring his back while making a throw. ... Former NHL defenseman Chris Chelios and Michigan-born musician Kid Rock were in attendance at Comerica Park.
