Phillies 5, Braves 4: Cody Asche finished with two hits and scored twice while Marlon Byrd’s groundout brought home the go-ahead run as host Philadelphia rallied to win the series opener.

Byrd’s one-out grounder in the seventh inning snapped a 4-4 tie as the Phillies came back from a 4-0 deficit entering the fifth to win for the fourth time in their past 12 games. Luis Garcia (1-0) pitched a scoreless seventh for his second major-league victory and Freddy Galvis added two hits for Philadelphia.

Chris Johnson hit a two-run homer and Justin Upton drove in his 100th run of the year for the Braves, who have lost 12 of 14 to drop to 5-18 in September. Jordan Walden (0-2) gave up the go-ahead run after starter Ervin Santana allowed four runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Freddie Freeman’s RBI groundout and Upton’s run-scoring single in the first put Atlanta ahead 2-0, and Johnson hammered Jerome Williams’ 0-1 fastball deep into the left-field seats in the fourth for a two-run shot to double the lead. The Phillies scored in the fifth on Ben Revere’s groundout, then plated three runs in the sixth on Asche’s two-out double, Galvis’ infield single and a Santana wild pitch to even the score.

Walden walked Carlos Ruiz leading off the seventh, Ryan Howard’s bloop double over first put runners on second and third with one out, and Byrd grounded out to second to bring home Ruiz and put the Phillies ahead. Jonathan Papelbon – booed in his first home appearance since being suspended for seven games for making a lewd gesture toward Phillies fans on Sept. 14 – pitched the ninth for his 39th save, working around B.J. Upton’s one-out double.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Williams allowed four runs on eight hits with three strikeouts in six innings. … B.J. Upton set the Braves' single-season strikeout record (172) by fanning in the second and added to the mark with another one in the seventh. … Howard’s double snapped a 0-for-15 skid.
