Padres 3, Braves 2 (12): Will Venable lined a game-winning single to right field with the bases loaded in the 12th as host San Diego outlasted struggling Atlanta to win for the fourth time in five games.

Yangervis Solarte walked to lead off the 12th against Craig Kimbrel (0-3), moved to second on a wild pitch and was pushed to third when Kimbrel walked Chris Nelson to load the bases for Venable, whose liner sailed over Jason Heyward’s head for his second hit of the game. Tim Stauffer (3-2) wiggled out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the top of the 12th for the victory, and Tommy Medica and Rene Rivera finished with two hits apiece.

Freddie Freeman finished with three hits for Atlanta, which left 14 runners on base in losing its fifth in a row to drop 2 1/2 games behind Washington in the National League East. Kimbrel walked three and gave up two hits in 1 1/3 innings.

Freeman’s double plated B.J. Upton with one out in the first off San Diego starter Ian Kennedy, who allowed one run on two hits with five walks and seven strikeouts in five innings. San Diego tied it in the seventh on Solarte’s single through the left side of the infield to score Rivera, and Solarte raced home on Jordan Walden’s wild pitch to put the Padres ahead 2-1.

The Braves answered in the eighth when Heyward singled with one out, stole second and scored on Chris Johnson’s soft single to center. Both teams stranded runners at second in the ninth and Atlanta wasted a golden opportunity in the 12th, loading the bases with no outs before a double play and a diving stop by first baseman Yasmani Grandal ended the inning.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Atlanta starter Ervin Santana gave up two runs on six hits with four walks and six strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings. … Solarte, acquired from the Yankees in the Chase Headley trade July 22, has driven in at least one run in eight of his first 11 games with the Padres. … San Diego stranded 14 runners on base.
