Braves 3, Mets 1: Freddie Freeman and Jason Heyward drove in first-inning runs and Aaron Harang posted his ninth victory as visiting Atlanta salvaged the finale of the four-game series.
Freeman and Ramiro Pena each recorded two hits while Andrelton Simmons also added a pair and scored twice as the Braves ended their four-game losing streak. Harang (9-6) won his fourth consecutive start, holding the Mets to one run on four hits over seven innings, and Craig Kimbrel came on to get the final four outs for his major league-leading 28th save.
Bartolo Colon (8-8) worked in and out of trouble all night, allowing 10 hits but only three runs with no walks and seven strikeouts. David Wright drove in New York's lone run and walked twice.
Simmons singled in the first and came home on a double to right field by Freeman, who scored on Heyward's base hit to stake the Braves to a 2-0 lead. Simmons and Freeman hit back-to-back singles to start the third, and the former scored on Justin Upton’s double-play grounder to create a three-run advantage.
The Mets got one back in the bottom of the frame, when Eric Young Jr. hit a leadoff single and stole second before racing home on Wright’s base hit to left. But Harang retired the next seven batters and got Travis d’Arnaud to fly out to center with the bases loaded to close the fifth before retiring the Mets in order in the both sixth and seventh.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Atlanta started Pena at third base for the struggling Chris Johnson, who is 3-for-24 with 10 strikeouts in his last six games. … Kimbrel, who has more saves against the Mets (21) than any other team, struck out PH Kirk Nieuwenhuis with two on to end the eighth. … The Braves head to Chicago for a weekend series with the Cubs, while the Mets host a three-game set against Miami.
