Braves 5, Mets 3: B.J. Upton and Jason Heyward each collected two hits and host Atlanta took advantage of three New York errors in the eighth inning to rally from a 3-0 deficit and win the series opener.

Tommy La Stella drove in a run during the decisive four-run eighth, and errors by Juan Lagares and Eric Campbell plated runs as Atlanta turned around a 3-1 deficit entering the frame to extend its winning streak to five games. Anthony Varvaro (3-1) pitched a scoreless eighth and Craig Kimbrel earned his 25th save in support of starter Alex Wood, who settled down after allowing three early runs to strike out seven in six innings.

Jeurys Familia (1-3), who committed the first error of the eighth for the Mets, gave up four runs (one earned) in two-thirds of an inning after starter Zack Wheeler yielded one run on four hits with five walks in 6 1/3 frames. Curtis Granderson snapped an 0-for-17 skid with two hits, including a leadoff homer, and Daniel Murphy went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

New York carried a 3-1 advantage into the eighth, but everything fell apart after Justin Upton and Heyward started the inning with back-to-back singles. A throwing error by Familia loaded the bases, La Stella’s single to center and Lagares’ error on the play resulted in two runs and tied the game 3-3, and Campbell bobbled Andrelton Simmons’ chopper to third to score Chris Johnson and put Atlanta ahead.

Granderson hit Wood’s third pitch of the game into the right-center field seats, Chris Young scored on Travis d’Arnaud’s double to center in the second and Young’s sacrifice fly in the third plated Murphy to give New York a 3-0 lead. The Braves, who were hitless through three innings and stranded six baserunners over the first four frames, got on the board on Freddie Freeman’s sacrifice fly in the fifth.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Freeman, who walked with the bases loaded to plate Atlanta’s fifth run, finished with three free passes and two RBIs. … The Braves announced C Evan Gattis will be placed on the disabled list with a bulging thoracic disk in his back. … New York 3B David Wright did not travel with the team to Atlanta and will rehab a left shoulder bruise.
