Yankees 3, Red Sox 2: Chris Capuano allowed only an unearned run in 6 2/3 solid innings to lift visiting New York to a win in the opener of a season-ending three-game series.

Francisco Cervelli was 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Yankees, who gave retiring superstar shortstop Derek Jeter a night off after his dramatic walk-off RBI single Thursday in his home finale. Capuano (3-4) yielded four singles and struck out five with no walks to win for the first time in his last five starts.

Boston's Steven Wright (0-1) let up two unearned runs and four hits in five innings in his second career major-league start and first this season. Rusney Castillo homered and Bryce Brentz singled in a run to account for the offense for Red Sox, who were limited to six hits after back-to-back 11-run efforts against Tampa Bay.

Allen Craig singled to begin the bottom of the second and came around on Brentz's base hit to left to begin the scoring between two makeshift lineups filled with rookies and reserves. New York replied immediately in the third, as Cervelli knocked in a run and then scored when second baseman Mookie Betts had a throwing error on the back end of a potential double play.

John Ryan Murphy doubled and scored on Zelous Wheeler's sacrifice fly in the sixth to make it 3-1 and Capuano cruised into the seventh before Castillo greeted reliever Shawn Kelley with his second home run in as many days to cut Boston's deficit in half. Adam Warren struck out two in a perfect eighth and David Robertson bounced back from his blown save Thursday night by stranding a runner at second base in the ninth to pick up his 39th save.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
Jeter is expected to be in the starting lineup as the designated hitter both Saturday and Sunday. ... The Yankees improved to 68-2 when leading after eight innings and 11-6 against the Red Sox in 2014. ... Castillo has three extra-base hits and five RBIs over his last three games.
