Red Sox 4, Angels 2:
Yoenis Cespedes doubled in a pair and Allen Webster bounced back with 6 2/3 solid innings as Boston took the opener of the three-game series from host Los Angeles.

Mike Napoli belted a solo homer and Dustin Pedroia recorded two hits and an RBI for the Red Sox, who won for the fourth time in the last 16 games. Webster (2-1), who walked six in 2 2/3 innings to suffer a loss his last time out, allowed two runs on four hits and a pair of walks in the longest outing of his major-league career.

Mike Trout recorded his 82nd RBI with a sacrifice fly and Chris Iannetta doubled and scored as the Angels lost their fourth straight and dropped four games behind first-place Oakland in the American League West. Jered Weaver (12-7) yielded four runs and seven hits in six innings to suffer his first loss since June 16.

A disagreement over the strike zone with home plate umpire Dale Scott seemed to rattle Weaver in the third and led to three straight hits as Boston jumped on top. Pedroia’s single to left scored Christian Vazquez and Cespedes followed David Ortiz's flyout with a double down the line in left to put the Red Sox ahead 3-0.

Webster nearly squandered the lead in the bottom of the inning as Los Angeles took advantage of a walk and an error to score twice, but Josh Hamilton grounded out to first to end the rally and Napoli provided some insurance with a two-out blast to left-center in the fifth. Tommy Layne recorded the final out of the seventh and Junichi Tazawa worked a scoreless eighth before Koji Uehara tossed the ninth to pick up his 24th save.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Red Sox CF Jackie Bradley Jr., who is mired in an 0-for-27 slump with 13 strikeouts, did not start but came on as a defensive replacement in the eighth inning and robbed Howie Kendrick of extra bases with a lunging grab near the wall for the first out of the ninth. … Trout is 0-for-10 over the last three games, dropping his average to .298. … Angels RHP Kevin Jepsen worked a scoreless inning of relief and has not allowed an earned run in any of his last 21 appearances.
