Yankees 6, Red Sox 4: Derek Jeter doubled in a pair of runs and Mark Teixeira homered as visiting New York evened the series with Boston at a game apiece.
Jacoby Ellsbury and Carlos Beltran each added an RBI while Martin Prado recorded his first hit and scored for the Yankees, who pulled within five games of first-place Baltimore in the American League East. Shane Greene settled down after a rocky start but was pulled after 4 2/3 frames, leaving Shawn Kelley (2-3) to pick up the win in relief before David Robertson earned his 28th save.
Allen Webster (1-1) made his second start of the season for the Red Sox and struggled with his control, issuing six walks in 2 2/3 innings while being charged with four runs and two hits. Mike Napoli homered while Christian Vazquez and David Ortiz each drove in a run to pace the Boston offense.
The Red Sox jumped on top in the second as Yoenis Cespedes singled in his first at-bat since arriving in a trade from Oakland and immediately scored when Napoli sent a towering blast out of the stadium beyond the left-field seats. Vazquez singled in Daniel Nava later in the frame to make it a 3-0 gap.
New York came right back in the next half-inning as Webster lost the strike zone, walking the first three batters of the third to load the bases. Jeter blooped a double down the line in right to plate a pair before Ellsbury’s groundout tied it and Beltran’s single gave the Yankees the lead, and Webster walked two more before finally being removed.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Teixeira’s home run off left-hander Craig Breslow in the fifth was his 19th of the season and ended up on a rooftop across the street from the left-field wall. … Yankees 2B Stephen Drew was playing his second career game at second base after arriving in a trade from Boston on Thursday. He made a nice play with a glove flip in the second inning and added an RBI double in the seventh against his former team. … The Red Sox placed C David Ross (plantar fasciitis) on the 15-day DL and recalled C Dan Butler from Triple-A Pawtucket.
