Red Sox 4, Rangers 2:
David Ortiz blasted a go-ahead three-run homer in the eighth as Boston rallied back to take the rubber match of a three-game set from visiting Texas.

The Red Sox put runners on the corners in the eighth against Alexi Ogando (0-1) before left-hander Neal Cotts was summoned to face Ortiz with one out. Cotts started Ortiz off with a pair of sliders but left a 1-1 fastball over the heart of the plate and the veteran slugger sent it around the “Pesky Pole” in right to give Boston a 4-2 lead.

Andrew Miller (1-0) earned the win in relief of Jake Peavy, who allowed one run and three hits in 6 2/3 innings, and Koji Uehara worked a perfect ninth for his second save. Mitch Moreland homered and Alex Rios delivered a sacrifice fly for the Rangers to back starter Robbie Ross, who yielded an unearned run on two hits and six walks in 5 1/3 frames.

The Red Sox managed only one hit off Ross through the first five innings but it turned out to be a big one when Dustin Pedroia followed back-to-back walks with an infield dribbler. Ross had no chance of getting Pedroia at first but fired anyway, sailing the throw wide and allowing Jackie Bradley Jr. to score on the error.

Peavy cruised through the first six innings but finally gave up a run in the seventh, when Moreland led off and belted a 2-0 fastball into the Texas bullpen in right to knot it up. Elvis Andrus doubled off Miller leading off the eighth and moved up on a groundout before tagging and scoring on Rios’ sacrifice fly to center to give Texas its first lead of the afternoon.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Rangers 3B Adrian Beltre flew back to Texas to undergo an MRI on his tight left quad.
