Brewers 4, Red Sox 0: Yovani Gallardo outdueled Jon Lester as visiting Milwaukee finished off a three-game sweep of Boston.
Khris Davis had two hits and scored twice while Mark Reynolds drove in a run for the Brewers, who benefited from a pair of unearned runs. Gallardo (2-0) yielded seven hits and did not walk a batter while striking out three in 6 2/3 innings, and two relievers polished off the shutout for Milwaukee.
Lester (0-2) allowed four runs - two earned - on seven hits and a walk in 7 1/3 innings for the Red Sox. Daniel Nava and Jackie Bradley Jr. each doubled for Boston, which left nine men on base.
The Brewers got things started in the second inning when Jonathan Lucroy led off with a double and moved up on Davis’ bunt single before scoring on Reynolds’ single to right that was misplayed by Nava, allowing Davis to cross as well. Jeff Bianchi’s two-out single in the seventh plated Davis for a 3-0 cushion.
David Ross’ throwing error in the eighth allowed Ryan Braun to move to third after a steal of second, and Aramis Ramirez made the Red Sox pay with an RBI single to right. Boston put runners in scoring position in four different innings but could not come up with the big hit.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Red Sox placed 3B Will Middlebrooks (calf) on the 15-day disabled list and recalled INF Brock Holt from Triple-A Pawtucket. … Boston manager John Farrell lost his first replay challenge in the second when an out call at first base was upheld. … Braun (thumb) returned to the lineup after sitting out Saturday and went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base.
