Rays 3, Orioles 1: Drew Smyly allowed one run on two hits over seven strong innings as visiting Tampa Bay held off Baltimore after losing the first two games of the series.
Ben Zobrist, Matt Joyce and Wil Myers each knocked in a run during the first two innings and Evan Longoria had three hits for the Rays. Smyly (9-10), who pitched his first career shutout in his previous outing, walked one and struck out six while retiring 16 of the last 17 batters he faced and throwing 87 pitches.
Chris Davis belted his 23rd homer in the second inning for the Orioles, who lead the second-place New York Yankees by six games in the American League East. Baltimore starter Kevin Gausman (7-6) lasted only four innings while yielding three runs (two earned) and six hits.
Zobrist doubled with one out and scored on a Joyce fielder’s choice before Myers blooped an RBI single to right field for a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Zobrist’s sacrifice fly brought home an unearned run in the second and Davis answered by lining a shot over the right-center field fence in the bottom of the frame.
Smyly retired 12 straight batters before Steve Pearce’s two-out single in the sixth, but Adam Jones struck out swinging to end the threat. Brad Boxberger struck out one in a scoreless eighth inning for the Rays and Jake McGee fanned one in a perfect ninth to notch his 15th save.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Smyly is 3-1 while permitting only six runs and 18 hits over 36 innings in five starts since being acquired from Detroit on July 31 in the David Price deal …. Pearce extended his career-high hitting streak to 10 games. … Tampa Bay OF Kevin Kiermaier returned to the lineup after missing two contests with a sore neck and went 0-for-4.
