Cubs 2, Orioles 1: Tsuyoshi Wada allowed one hit and fanned eight over 6 1/3 dominant innings while fellow rookie Arismendy Alcantara homered as Chicago completed a three-game home sweep of Baltimore.

Wada (4-1) – a former Orioles minor-leaguer – issued a two-out walk in the first to Adam Jones, but that was his only blemish until Steve Pearce homered two pitches into the seventh. The 33-year-old Japanese left-hander won his third straight start and Anthony Rizzo added an RBI double as the Cubs improved to 8-2 in their last 10 interleague contests.

Pearce’s 14th home run of the season was the only hit Baltimore could manage as the Orioles were swept for the first time since May 12-14 and saw their lead in the American League East fall to six games. Miguel Gonzalez (6-7) took the hard-luck loss in his first major-league action since Aug. 7, giving up two runs on six hits in 6 1/3 frames.

Each starting pitcher allowed only one baserunner until Alcantara ended the pitchers’ duel with one out in the bottom of the fifth when he drove a 2-1 fastball from Gonzalez over the fence in right-center. Chicago added another run in the sixth as Chris Coghlan opened the frame with a two-base hit before Rizzo plated him with a one-out double that rolled to the wall in left.

Wada, who carried his no-hit bid into the seventh before Pearce hammered a 0-1 fastball over the seats in left, departed two pitches later after retiring Jones, and Neil Ramirez got the final two outs of the seventh. Another former Oriole, Pedro Strop, worked a flawless eighth and Hector Rondon wrapped up the one-hitter with a perfect ninth for his 21st save.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Wada recorded his first hit as a major leaguer on an infield single in the third. … The Cubs have homered in a season-high nine straight games. … Chicago’s bullpen, which has posted a 1.69 ERA over its last 28 contests, allowed only three hits over 11 2/3 scoreless innings in this series.
