Orioles 2, Mariners 1: Wei-Yin Chen struck out eight in 7 1/3 innings while defeating Seattle for the second straight start and Manny Machado collected three hits as host Baltimore won for the eighth time in 11 games.

J.J. Hardy delivered the tiebreaking RBI single in the sixth inning to help Chen (12-3) win his fifth straight start as the Orioles moved 2 1/2 games ahead of Toronto in the American League East. The left-hander allowed one run and five hits to follow up an effort in which he blanked the Mariners on five hits on July 24.

Andrew Miller retired two batters in the eighth in his Orioles debut after being acquired from Boston on Thursday and Zach Britton worked a perfect ninth for his 22nd save. Roenis Elias (8-9) gave up two runs (one earned) and seven hits with seven strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings as Seattle remained three games out of a wild-card spot.

Machado smacked a double off the right-center field fence to start the sixth and moved to third when Seattle shortstop Chris Taylor made an error on All-Star Adam Jones’ grounder. After Elias struck out Nelson Cruz and Chris Davis, Hardy stroked a single to center to give the Orioles a 2-1 edge.

Baltimore pushed across a third-inning run as Delmon Young doubled, reached third on an infield single by Nick Markakis and scored on Machado’s two-out base hit to center. The Mariners tied the score in the fourth, when All-Star Robinson Cano singled and scored on Kendrys Morales’ double into the left-field corner.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Davis (stomach virus) was back in the starting lineup after missing three straight starts. … CF Austin Jackson (0-for-3 with a walk) and RF Chris Denorfia (0-for-4) made their Seattle debuts after being acquired from Detroit and San Diego, respectively, prior to Thursday’s non-waiver trade deadline. … Chen has given up nine runs in 32 innings during his five-game winning streak.
