Orioles 8, Red Sox 4: Jonathan Schoop went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored while Nick Markakis doubled in a run and scored twice as visiting Baltimore pounded out 15 hits in taking the series opener from Boston.

Nelson Cruz drove in two while Adam Jones, Matt Wieters and J.J. Hardy each added an RBI for the Orioles, who have won three straight. Chris Tillman (2-1) allowed three runs on seven hits in five innings and Brian Matusz worked 2 2/3 solid frames before Darren O’Day recorded the final four outs for his first save.

Red Sox starter John Lackey (2-2) was knocked around for six earned runs for the second straight outing and yielded 10 hits while walking four in 5 1/3 innings. Dustin Pedroia drove in a run and scored while Brock Holt, A.J. Pierzynski and Xander Bogaerts each added an RBI for Boston.

Markakis sent the first pitch of the game down the line in left and, although every replay angle appeared to show the ball foul, the umpires confirmed a fair call after a long review and Markakis scored three batters later on Jones’ infield single. Markakis kicked off a three-run third inning with an RBI double and scored on Cruz’s two-run single to right to make it 4-0.

Holt, who was recalled earlier in the day, got Boston on the board with a two-out RBI single in the fourth but the Orioles fought back with a pair of two-out runs in the next half-inning to make it a 6-1 gap. The Red Sox fought for two runs in the fifth and made it a 7-4 game with a run in the seventh but could not close the gap any further.

GAME NOTEBOOK: INF Ryan Roberts was designated for assignment to make room for Holt. … Boston won a challenge in the eighth when Holt was initially ruled out on a play at first base but was given the single after review. … Baltimore 3B Manny Machado (knee) is scheduled to play his first extended spring training game on Saturday.
