Orioles 3, Tigers 1: Chris Tillman outdueled Justin Verlander with 8 1/3 strong innings as visiting Baltimore avoided a three-game sweep at Detroit.

Adam Jones drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and scored in the sixth for the Orioles, who snapped a four-game slide. Tillman (1-0) allowed one run and five hits while walking one and striking out five before Tommy Hunter took care of the final two outs for his second save in as many chances.

Torii Hunter homered and Victor Martinez doubled for the Tigers. Verlander (0-1) made his second start and surrendered two runs on five hits with a pair of walks while striking out three over eight innings for Detroit.

Tillman left a 2-0 fastball up in the zone to Hunter in the fourth and the veteran slugger ripped it into the stands in left-center for his third homer of the series and a 1-0 lead. The Orioles got that run back in the sixth when Jones doubled and came in on Nelson Cruz’s double into the gap in right-center.

Nick Markakis ripped a triple into right field off Verlander with one out in the eighth and came in when Jones lifted a sacrifice fly to deep left to put Baltimore on top. Matt Wieters provided some insurance with a solo home run off Al Alburquerque in the ninth.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Orioles SS J.J. Hardy (back spasms) was scratched from the lineup for the second time in three games. … Baltimore INF Ryan Flaherty notched his first hit of the season to improve to 1-for-18. … The Tigers begin a five-game interleague road trip through Los Angeles and San Diego on Tuesday while the Orioles visit the New York Yankees on Monday.
