Guthrie (8-9) won his third straight start after allowing two runs and seven hits - all singles - and throwing 109 pitches (76 strikes) as the Royals climbed within 2 1/2 games of first-place Detroit in the American League Central with their fourth straight victory. Salvador Perez recorded a two-run single while Alcides Escobar and Norichika Aoki drove in one apiece as Kansas City improved to 12-3 in its last 15 contests and moved one-half game ahead of New York and Toronto for the final wild card spot.

Jake Lamb recorded an RBI single in his first major-league game while Mark Trumbo also drove in a run for the Diamondbacks, who lost for the fifth time in six contests. Vidal Nuno (2-8) fell to 0-3 in six starts with Arizona after allowing five runs and seven hits in four innings.

After Trumbo's sacrifice fly made it 1-0, Billy Butler led off the second with a double before Gordon belted the next pitch out to right for his 10th homer to give the Royals a 2-1 lead. Kansas City moved in front 4-1 in the third when Aoki and Omar Infante singled, and executed a double steal before Perez drove them home.

Lamb sliced a two-out single to left - the Diamondbacks' final hit - to cut the deficit to 4-2 before Escobar restored the three-run margin in the fourth when he singled to drive in Lorenzo Cain, who led off the frame with a double. Kansas City made it 6-2 in the ninth when Aoki singled off reliever Eury De La Rosa's glove to drive in Escobar.
