Hunter Renfroe hit a home run and drove in four runs as the visiting Los Angeles Angels used a fast start to earn a 5-4 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Monday in the annual Patriots' Day game at Fenway Park.
The Angels scored four runs in the first inning and one in the second before holding off the Red Sox to salvage the finale of the four-game series.
Jake Lamb went 3-for-4 and Shohei Ohtani went 2-for-5 with a run for Los Angeles, which ended a three-game losing streak.
Boston's Rafael Devers hit a one-out single in the ninth to cut the Red Sox's deficit to a run. But Angels right-hander Carlos Estevez stranded two on base in the inning for his second save.
Los Angeles left-hander Tucker Davidson (1-1) gave up one run on three hits over 3 1/3 innings to earn the win after taking over for Ohtani. The second rain delay of the day limited Ohtani's start to two innings, in which he gave up a run with three strikeouts.
Zach Neto, the Angels' first-round draft pick in June, recorded his first major league hit on a leadoff single in the second inning.
Red Sox right-hander Brayan Bello (0-1) struck out five while allowing five runs over 2 2/3 innings in his season debut. Kutter Crawford followed with 6 1/3 scoreless innings for Boston, giving up one hit with five strikeouts.
One out into the first inning, Ohtani singled and Taylor Ward was hit by a pitch before Renfroe hit a three-run home run, his fourth. Brandon Drury added a sacrifice fly in the inning for a 4-0 lead.
The Red Sox got a run back in the first inning without the benefit of a hit as Rob Refsnyder's grounder to shortstop scored Raimel Tapia, who walked and advanced on two wild pitches.
Singles by Neto and Ohtani preceded Renfroe's RBI grounder to shortstop in the second inning.
Ohtani and Davidson held the Red Sox hitless until the fourth, when Rafael Devers doubled.
The Red Sox scored a pair of sixth-inning runs. Refsnyder hit a leadoff single, reached third after Triston Casas greeted Angels left-hander Aaron Loup with a double and scored on Enrique Hernandez's sacrifice fly to center. Reese McGuire beat out a rolling grounder inside the first base line for a single to bring in another run.
