Oswaldo Cabrera hit a go-ahead single with one out in the ninth inning off Emmanuel Clase to lift the visiting New York Yankees to a 4-3 victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday afternoon.
New York's rally started when Giancarlo Stanton legged out an infield single and took second base after shortstop Amed Rosario committed a throwing error. After Clase (1-1) struck out Franchy Cordero, Cabrera roped a 1-1 slider off the base of the right field wall to plate pinch runner Gleyber Torres.
The Yankees won their fourth series in a row to start the season by overcoming an early three-run deficit.
Cordero hit a tying homer to open the seventh inning off Trevor Stephan. New York's first two runs scored on Kyle Higashioka's single in the fifth inning, with Andres Gimenez's throwing error a result of the ball hitting crew chief Larry Vanover in the face.
Josh Naylor and Josh Bell each had an RBI single in a two-run first inning off Clarke Schmidt. Rosario homered in the third inning before Cleveland rookie starter Peyton Battenfield appeared to tire in the fifth.
The Yankees' Wandy Peralta (1-0) pitched a 1-2-3 eighth when he was aided by Cabrera starting a double play following an error by Isiah Kiner-Falefa at third.
Clay Holmes fanned Rosario with the bases loaded in the ninth for his fourth save in as many chances.
Schmidt allowed three runs on six hits in four innings.
Battenfield allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits in 4 2/3 innings in his major league debut.
Cleveland took a controversial 1-0 lead with one out in the first inning.
Naylor hit a fly ball that appeared to be caught by center fielder Aaron Hicks, the play was overturned to a single and Steven Kwan scored although Cleveland took longer than the allotted 15 seconds to initiate a challenge. After umpires changed the initial call, New York manager Aaron Boone was ejected by Vanover.
When play resumed, Bell stroked a single to right field for a 2-0 lead. Rosario homered to right-center to make it 3-0 in the third.
Battenfield allowed a leadoff double to rookie Anthony Volpe and then retired 13 straight until Cabrera singled in the fifth. After Kiner-Falefa singled, Higashioka singled in Cabrera, and Kiner-Falefa scored the second run on Gimenez's errant throw.
