Pinch hitter Kyle Lewis belted a go-ahead, two-run homer in the eighth inning as the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks rallied for a 2-1 victory against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday.
Right-handers Merrill Kelly and Drey Jameson combined to give up one run over 7 2/3 innings for Arizona. Jameson (1-0) yielded the run on two hits with three walks and five strikeouts to earn the win. Andrew Chafin picked up his first save of the season.
The Dodgers' Mookie Betts delivered the game's first run with a seventh-inning homer.
Los Angeles right-hander Dustin May went seven scoreless innings for Los Angeles, in the longest outing of his career, giving up three hits and one walk while striking out four. May missed most of the past two seasons after Tommy John surgery.
Arizona pinch hitter Evan Longoria doubled with one out in the eighth inning against left-hander Alex Vesia (0-1) before Lewis followed with a two-run home run to left field, his first in an Arizona uniform. Lewis, the 2020 American League Rookie of the Year, was acquired from the Seattle Mariners in a November trade.
Kelly, who was a member of Team USA in the World Baseball Classic, started for Arizona but lasted just 3 2/3 innings. He did not give up a run but allowed three hits and four walks while striking out four.
The Dodgers put two aboard in the eighth inning on walks to rookies Miguel Vargas and James Outman before veteran Miguel Rojas lined out to shortstop to end the threat against D-backs right-hander Scott McGough.
Betts walked to lead off the ninth against McGough before Chafin came on to get Freddie Freeman to hit into a forceout before getting Will Smith on a comebacker and Max Muncy on a flyout to left.
Vargas reached base four times for Los Angeles on a hit and three walks. Corbin Carroll had two hits for Arizona.
The teams have split the first two games of a four-game, season-opening series.
