Detroit starter Tarik Skubal pitched three innings, allowing two runs and four hits, with no walks and four strikeouts.
Kyle Funkhouser (6-3) gave up four runs and three hits in 1 2/3 innings.
The Tigers were without reliever Joe Jimenez and bench coach George Lombard. Both tested positive for COVID-19, despite being fully vaccinated, after experiencing symptoms.
Hayes led off the bottom of the first with an infield single. Newman followed with his fifth homer, a shot to left, to put the Pirates ahead 2-0.
Wilson enjoyed one-two-three innings in the third, fourth and fifth before giving up the lead in the sixth.
With one out, Robbie Grossman doubled to the corner in right. Jeimer Candelario walked and Eric Haase's base hit to right loaded the bases. Goodman's double down the line in right brought Grossman and Candelario home to tie it. Miguel Cabrera, pinch-hitting, lofted a curveball to center for a sacrifice fly to drive in Haase for a 3-2 Tigers lead.
In the seventh, Ben Gamel led off for Pittsburgh with a walk and went to second on Funkhouser's balk. Cole Tucker's single to center sent Gamel to third. Pinch-hitter Colin Moran walked to load the bases.
Hayes' single to right drove in Gamel and Tucker to put Pittsburgh ahead 4-3. Two outs later, Tsutsugo singled to right to bring in Moran and Hayes to make it 6-3.
