Giancarlo Stanton homered, doubled and drove in three runs to lead the visiting New York Yankees to their 10th straight win, a 5-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves, whose nine-game winning streak ended.
It was the first time since 1901 that two teams carrying winning streaks of nine or more games had met. The Yankees have a 10-game winning streak for the fourth time in the past 16 years. The last time they had a longer run was when the won 11 in a row in 1985.
Stanton hit a solo homer in the second inning and lined a tiebreaking, two-run double down the left field line in the sixth. He went 2-for-3 and has now reached base safely in 20 consecutive games.
The winning pitcher was Jordan Montgomery (5-5), who pitched five innings and allowed one run on two hits and four walks with two strikeouts. He has allowed three or fewer runs in his past 10 starts.
Jonathan Loaisiga threw two scoreless innings and fanned four, Wandy Peralta worked a shutout eighth and Aroldis Chapman pitched a 1-2-3 ninth.
The losing pitcher was Huascar Ynoa (4-3), who worked six innings and allowed three runs on four hits. He struck out nine and walked one.
Each team scored a run in the second inning. Stanton hit an opposite-field homer to right field, his 21st, and Atlanta's Dansby Swanson answered with a solo homer to center, his 25th. It was Swanson's 10th homer since the All-Star Game.
The Yankees took the lead for good in the sixth. DJ LeMahieu was hit by a pitch to open the inning, and Joey Gallo coaxed a two-out walk. Stanton delivered the decisive double, which was measured at 119.2 mph to become the hardest-hit ball ever struck at Truist Park.
The Yankees added insurance in the eighth on a two-run single from Gary Sanchez off Jesse Chavez. The runs were charged to Edgar Santana.
The two-game interleague series concludes Tuesday night.
