Jo Adell snapped a 2-2 tie with a ninth-inning grand slam and the Los Angeles Angels went on to defeat the host Detroit Tigers 8-2 on Tuesday.
Adell's first homer of the season came with two out after the Angels loaded the bases against Gregory Soto (4-3) on two walks sandwiched around a single by Jose Iglesias. Kurt Suzuki went back-to-back with Adell with his fourth homer of the season.
Jared Walsh walked four times and scored a run, while Shohei Ohtani also reached four times on a single and three free passes while adding a run scored. Jack Mayfield reached base three times while scoring a run and knocking in another. Brandon Marsh added two hits and an RBI.
Mike Mayers (3-4) pitched the last two innings and struck out four while picking up the victory.
Grayson Greiner had two hits and scored twice for Detroit. Miguel Cabrera remained at 499 career homers, going 0-for-2 with two walks.
Detroit starter Casey Mize gave up two runs on four hits in four innings. He walked four and struck out four. Los Angeles starter Dylan Bundy allowed two runs on three hits in 4 2/3 innings. He struck out three with two walks.
The Angels scored a run in the first. Ohtani led off with a single, stole second and scored on Marsh's two-out single.
Mayfield drove in the second run of the game in the third. David Fletcher led off with a single and moved up on a wild pitch. Mize walked Walsh before retiring the next two batters. Mayfield then smacked a single to right.
Detroit scored in the bottom of the inning. Greiner and Robbie Grossman walked to set up Jonathan Schoop's run-scoring single.
Los Angeles had runners in scoring position in the fifth with two down, but reliever Kyle Funkhouser escaped the jam when Mayfield fouled out to the catcher.
The Tigers knotted the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth. Greiner hit a one-out double and scored on Grossman's two-out single, which led to Bundy's exit. Jeimer Candelario flied out with the bases loaded later in the inning.
