Yohel Pozo belted a go-ahead, three-run homer in his big-league debut, and the Texas Rangers halted the visiting Oakland Athletics' seven-game winning streak with an 8-6 victory on Friday night in Arlington, Texas.
With two men on and Texas trailing 4-3 in the sixth, Pozo, who singled in his initial major league at-bat in the second, drove the first pitch thrown by Sergio Romo off the left field foul pole.
Batting .337 with 19 homers at Triple-A Round Rock, Pozo became the 10th player in Rangers' history to homer in his major league debut. The designated hitter also helped Texas end a five-game, head-to-head skid against the A's.
DJ Peters clubbed a two-run homer and had three RBIs for the Rangers, who are 2-2 since losing six straight.
Matt Olson hit his 29th home run while Mitch Moreland and Seth Brown each had two hits and combined for three RBIs as the A's lost for the third time in 14 contests.
After scoring just one run in each of their previous two contests, the Rangers led 3-0 after one inning. Texas took advantage of two Oakland errors and got an RBI single from Nathaniel Lowe and a sacrifice fly from Peters in the frame.
Oakland finally got to Texas starter Dane Dunning in the fifth when Brown's RBI double off the left field fence made it a 3-1 contest. Brown subsequently scored on Starling Marte's infield single.
That proved to be the end of the night for Dunning, who came off the injured list to allow two runs on four hits and two walks over 4 2/3 innings. He struck out four. Dunning had been sidelined since Aug. 3 due to an ankle issue.
Oakland went ahead with two runs in the sixth against Rangers reliever Dennis Santana (2-2). Moreland tied the game on a run-scoring triple, and Matt Chapman drove him home with a single.
After Pozo put Texas ahead, Olson's solo shot in the seventh got the A's within 6-5.
Peters extended the Rangers' cushion with his two-run drive into the left field seats in the seventh.
Oakland starter Cole Irvin (8-11) gave up five runs, three earned, on eight hits over five-plus innings. He fanned two and walked one.
