Jaime Barria threw 6 2/3 scoreless innings and got a boost from the bullpen as the Los Angeles Angels held on for a 1-0 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Saturday afternoon in Anaheim, Calif.
Barria (2-0) gave up four hits and one walk before leaving the game with the bases loaded and two out in the seventh. But right-hander Steve Cishek retired Mark Canha on a fly to left to end the threat.
In the eighth, left-handed reliever Jose Quijada got Matt Olson to hit into a double play that quelled an Oakland threat. And closer Raisel Iglesias pitched the final 1 1/3 innings for his 22nd save.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third when the Angels pushed across a run but missed a chance for more.
Matt Thaiss led off the inning with a single off Athletics starter Cole Irvin. One out later, he went to second on a single by David Fletcher. Shohei Ohtani followed with a double to right-center, scoring Thaiss for a 1-0 lead. Fletcher, though, was held up at third.
With runners on second and third and one out, Phil Gosselin lined out to second and Jose Iglesias grounded out to shortstop, allowing Irvin to escape further damage.
Irvin (7-10) pitched well in defeat, giving up one run and five hits, striking out six and walking one over 6 1/3 innings.
Meanwhile, Barria was sharp, picking up where he left off in his previous start. Barria, making his first start of the season last week against Minnesota, got the victory after giving up two runs in seven innings.
Barria allowed just two hits on 82 pitches through six innings. He got two quick outs to start the seventh, but gave up consecutive singles to Sean Murphy and Tony Kemp. Elvis Andrus followed with a sharp two-hopper to Jack Mayfield at third, but Mayfield booted the ball for an error, loading the bases for Canha.
That spelled the end of the afternoon for Barria, replaced by Cishek, who got Canha to end the threat.
Oakland was 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.
