Miguel Cabrera hit two solo homers, Casey Mize limited Baltimore to an unearned run in seven innings and the Detroit Tigers defeated the visiting Orioles 6-2 on Thursday.
Cabrera went 3-for-3 with a walk, and Eric Haase had two hits and two RBIs for the Tigers. Jeimer Candelario supplied three hits, including an RBI triple, in the opener of a four-game series.
Mize (6-5) recorded his first victory since June 26 while allowing four hits and two walks. He struck out two.
Orioles starter Alexander Wells (1-1) gave up four runs on seven hits in five innings. He walked three and fanned four.
The Orioles squandered a scoring chance in the first. Cedric Mullins led off with a triple. Following a groundout, Trey Mancini hit a comebacker and Mullins got caught in a rundown. Mullins eventually was tagged out by third baseman Candelario.
Detroit scored two runs in the bottom of the inning. Akil Baddoo drew a walk and advanced to third on Wells' errant pickoff attempt. Jonathan Schoop's single through a drawn-in infield knocked him in. Cabrera's one-out single moved Schoop to third, and Haase made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly.
The Tigers scored another run in the third. Schoop hit a one-out double and moved to third on a groundout. After a walk to Cabrera, Haase ripped an RBI single through the hole. Detroit had a chance to score more, as it loaded the bases, but Willi Castro flied out to deep right-center.
Baltimore left two runners stranded in the fourth when Maikel Franco grounded out.
Cabrera smacked his first homer of the game in the fifth, a one-out blast to the opposite field for a 4-0 Tigers advantage.
The Orioles broke through with a run in the seventh on singles by Ryan McKenna and Franco and left fielder Baddoo's throwing error on Domingo Leyba's flyout.
Detroit answered with a pair of two-out runs in the bottom of the inning. Cabrera hit the 497th homer of his career and 10th of the season. Haase followed with a single, and Candelario ripped an RBI triple.
Baltimore scored an eighth-inning run on Jose Cisnero's wild pitch.
