Mitch Haniger homered twice, doubled and drove in three runs as the Seattle Mariners defeated the visiting Oakland Athletics 5-4 Saturday night.
With the score tied at 4-all, Haniger was at the plate with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning when A's right-hander Lou Trivino (3-4) threw a wild pitch to let Jarred Kelenic come home with the winning run.
Right-hander Kendall Graveman (3-0) pitched the top of the ninth to earn the victory. Six Mariners combined for 6 1/3 innings of one-hit relief, giving up just one run, after rookie Logan Gilbert left early with a soaring pitch count.
The right-handed starter lasted just 2 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on five hits. He walked one and struck out five. Still, the Mariners won for the 10th straight time when Gilbert has started.
Aramis Garcia hit a solo homer for the Athletics, just over the right field wall and just inside the foul pole, tying the score 4-4 in the seventh inning.
The Mariners took a 1-0 lead in the first. With one out, Haniger doubled to center and advanced to third on Kyle Seager's groundout to the right side of the infield. Ty France grounded a two-out single into center to bring home the run.
The A's scored three times in the third to take the lead. Elvis Andrus led off with a line-drive single to left, and Mark Canha drew a one-out walk. Tony Kemp then lined a run-scoring single to center. The runners advanced on Matt Olson's flyout to deep center, and both scored when Jed Lowrie lined a single to right.
The Mariners got a run back in the bottom half of the inning as Haniger homered to left-center, just out of the reach of center fielder Ramon Laureano as he scaled the outfield wall.
Haniger added a two-run shot to center in the fifth, his team-leading 25th homer of the season.
A's right-hander Chris Bassitt gave up four runs on five hits in five innings, with three walks and six strikeouts.
