Rougned Odor's tiebreaking, two-out RBI single in the 10th inning Sunday afternoon helped the New York Yankees salvage a game in their three-game set with Tampa Bay, beating the Rays 8-4 in St. Petersburg, Fla.
In his debut with New York, the second baseman fought off a 3-2 pitch from Collin McHugh (0-1), looping a ball to center to score Aaron Hicks with the go-ahead run. Then Gary Sanchez and Gio Urshela drove in insurance markers.
In snapping their three-game losing streak, the Yankees won for just the fifth time in 18 games against the Rays since the beginning of last season.
Urshela went 4-for-5 with a homer, double and three RBIs, and DJ LeMahieu doubled to extend his hitting streak to 23 games against the Rays.
Aroldis Chapman (1-0) fanned the side in the ninth, and Albert Abreu tossed a perfect 10th to complete the victory.
Tampa Bay's Mike Zunino and Randy Arozarena slugged two-run homers, but the team managed just six hits.
Rays' opener Brent Honeywell Jr. spun two perfect innings in his major-league debut after he missed 3 1/2 years of game action following four major procedures, including Tommy John surgery before the 2018 season.
Batting .125, Zunino gave the Rays a 2-0 lead in the second inning when he homered deep to left off starter Jordan Montgomery on a two-out, 3-2 changeup.
But with Michael Wacha replacing Honeywell in the third, Urshela became the game's second No. 8 hitter to launch a two-run homer -- rocketing a 458-blast to dead center, tying the score for the Yankees.
After the Yankees gained a 3-2 edge, Arozarena hit high, two-run shot to right that carried beyond a leaping Aaron Judge to put the Rays up 4-3.
Wacha settled down the second time through the New York lineup and retired nine hitters in succession -- five by strikeout -- before handing the ball to the bullpen in the seventh inning.
The Yankees soon loaded the bases with one out against Cody Reed, but Ryan Thompson came on to get LeMahieu to ground into an inning-ending double play.
However, Gleyber Torres' RBI single to left in the eighth knotted the game at 4 to force extra innings.
