Hanser Alberto and Pedro Severino combined for nine hits as the Baltimore Orioles trounced the Royals 14-2 on Friday night in Kansas City. The Orioles had season highs in runs and hits (21).
John Means (10-9) picked up his first career win against the Royals. Means, who was a teammate of Royals center fielder Bubba Starling at Gardner-Edgerton (Kan.) High School, allowed two runs on five hits, tying his career best with seven innings pitched.
Eric Skoglund (0-1) took the loss. He gave up six runs on nine hits in four innings.
Jorge Soler entered the Royals' record books in the first with his 38th home run, tying Mike Moustakas' 2017 season. Soler took Means' second pitch into the Orioles' bullpen, 393 feet from home plate. He's now hit 10 home runs in August, the most in any month in his career.
The Orioles tied the score in the second. Jonathan Villar walked with one out, stole second and scored on Severino's RBI single to right.
Anthony Santander then put the Orioles ahead to stay with a three-run home run in the third inning. Alberto, who finished 5-for-6, led off with his second hit, a double off the wall in left. He moved to third on Trey Mancini's single and both runners scored on Santander's 417-foot blast.
Another run scored on Severino's second RBI single, but it was only a line drive in the box score. The flyball dropped between three fielders as Villar scored. Skoglund loaded the bases with another hit and a hit-batter before Richie Martin drove in the sixth Baltimore run with a sacrifice fly.
The Royals scored once in the fourth. Hunter Dozier's double followed by Alex Gordon's single preceded Cheslor Cuthbert RBI single. But Cuthbert and Gordon remained on first and second.
The Orioles made them pay with a two-run fifth, with both runs scoring on Alberto's fourth hit.
Villar stole home as part of a two-run seventh, the Orioles' first steal of home since May 2018. The Orioles added two runs in the eighth and two in the ninth.
