Left-hander Eric Lauer spoiled the major league debut of Los Angeles Dodgers prospect Dustin May with six strong innings Friday night, pitching the visiting San Diego Padres to a 5-2 victory.
Josh Naylor contributed a two-run double to a three-run sixth inning, ending May's night and helping the Padres even the four-game series after suffering an 8-2 loss on Thursday.
The highly regarded May (0-1) was pulled after 5 2/3 innings, charged with four runs (three earned) on nine hits. He struck out three and did not walk a batter.
The former third-round pick was promoted after having gone 6-5 with a 3.38 ERA at two minor-league levels this season.
Getting a two-run home run from Cody Bellinger in the fourth inning, the 21-year-old Texas native took a 2-1 lead into the sixth.
With one out, Wil Myers, Manny Machado and Eric Hosmer stroked consecutive singles to tie the score. After May recorded a second out, Naylor crushed a double to center field, propelling the Padres into a 4-2 lead.
Lauer (6-8) retired the Dodgers in order in the last of the sixth before handing off the ball to the San Diego bullpen, which combined for three shutout innings.
Lauer limited the Dodgers to two runs and three hits in his six innings. He struck out six and, like May, did not issue a walk.
Padres closer Kirby Yates, who worked a one-hit ninth, recorded his 32nd save, after Andres Munoz and Craig Stammen had worked a 1-2-3 inning apiece.
Myers' third hit of the game, an RBI single in the seventh inning, produced San Diego's final run. It was scored by Greg Garcia, who had doubled in a pinch-hit appearance.
Bellinger's homer was his 36th of the season and 100th of his career, allowing him to reach the milestone in just 401 games, the fastest in Dodgers history.
Mike Piazza held the previous club record with 100 homers in 422 games.
The Dodgers, who had won three in a row, had only three other hits -- all singles -- in the game.
Hosmer also collected three hits and Francisco Mejia had two for the Padres, who out-hit the Dodgers 14-4.
Mejia drove in the Padres' first run with a single in the second inning.
