Adalberto Mondesi's RBI single broke an 11th-inning tie, and two more runs scored on a throwing error by Nationals first baseman Ryan Zimmerman as the Kansas City Royals won 7-4 at Washington on Friday.
The Royals loaded the bases against lefty Jonny Venters (0-1) in the 11th, and Mondesi, who had three hits and scored twice, came through with the tiebreaking hit with one out. Alex Gordon then hit a hard grounder to Zimmerman, whose throw home got past the catcher.
The Nationals, who had won four straight and eight of nine, stranded 19 runners and could not take advantage of 11 walks.
Zimmerman (three doubles) and Brian Dozier had RBI hits in the bottom of the ninth as the Nationals tied the game at 4-4 against Royals closer Ian Kennedy.
Zimmerman had an RBI double in the seventh to cut Washington's deficit to 4-2. It was the 1,000th career RBI for Zimmerman, with Adam Eaton (two hits, three walks) scoring on the milestone hit.
The winning pitcher was Brian Flynn (1-0), who loaded the bases in the 10th inning but escaped the jam. Wily Peralta pitched around a one-out single in the last of the 11th to get his second save.
Kansas City starter Brad Keller allowed just one run on six hits in 5 2/3 innings. He walked five and struck out two.
Trea Turner (three hits) hit a 453-foot leadoff homer in the last of the first to give Washington a 1-0 lead.
It was the 19th game in a row that the Nationals went deep.
The Royals scored twice to take a 2-1 lead in the third. All-Star Whit Merrifield singled and scored on a triple by Mondesi. Gordon followed with an RBI single.
Kansas City made it 4-1 in the fifth with back-to-back RBI singles by Hunter Dozier and Jorge Soler.
Washington's Austin Voth, in his third start of the year, gave up four runs on five hits in 4 1/3 innings with three walks and six strikeouts.
