Jesse Chavez didn't give up an earned run in his first extended start of the season, Ronald Guzman homered and drove in two runs and the visiting Texas Rangers downed the Detroit Tigers 5-3 on Tuesday.
Chavez (3-2) lasted 6 1/3 innings and gave up one unearned run on five hits while walking none and striking out seven. He notched his first win as a starter since June 6, 2017, also against Detroit. He had been used as an opener and long reliever this season.
Texas slugger Joey Gallo was activated off the 10-day IL after recovering from a left oblique strain and batted fifth in the lineup. Gallo went 1-for-4 with a walk and drove in a run. Logan Forsythe scored and knocked in a run.
Rangers infielder Asdrubal Cabrera began a three-game league suspension for throwing equipment toward an umpire from the dugout against Cleveland on Thursday.
JaCoby Jones had two hits and scored for Detroit, which has lost five straight overall and 18 of its last 20 home games. Ronny Rodriguez hit a two-run homer with two out in the ninth. Jordan Zimmermann (0-5) allowed three runs on nine hits in five innings.
The Rangers scored two runs in the first. Shin-Soo Choo and Willie Calhoun opened the game with back-to-back singles. One out later, Nomar Mazara ripped a single up the middle to bring in Choo. A walk loaded the bases and Calhoun scored on Forsythe's sacrifice fly.
Texas added a run in the third. Elvis Andrus led off with a single off first baseman Brandon Dixon's glove. Gallo hit a one-out double to right-center to bring in Andrus.
Texas made it 4-0 in the sixth when Guzman greeted Daniel Stumpf with a home run to center that traveled an estimated 434 feet.
Detroit scored an unearned run in the bottom of the inning. Jones, Nicholas Castellanos and Miguel Cabrera strung together one-out singles. Jones scored when shortstop Andrus bounced the throw on Cabrera's infield hit.
The Rangers tacked on a run in the eighth on Forsythe's double, an error by center fielder Jones and Guzman's sacrifice fly.
