Michael Chavis had three hits and five RBIs, and J.D. Martinez homered twice as the Boston Red Sox took advantage of porous defense from the visiting Seattle Mariners in rainy conditions Sunday to win 11-2 and complete a three-game sweep.
Xander Bogaerts walked a career-high four times, and Rafael Devers had his third straight three-hit game as the Red Sox extended their season-best winning streak to five games. Boston has won 11 of its last 13, outscoring opponents 100-37 in that stretch.
Omar Narvaez homered for the second straight day for the Mariners, who have dropped 12 of their last 14 and were outscored 34-8 in the series.
The rookie Chavis, who entered mired in an 0-for-19 skid, ended his slump in the first inning on one of several defensive gaffes by the Mariners on the day.
With runners on first and third and two outs, Chavis popped up. Mariners second baseman Shed Long rushed over to field and slipped on the wet grass, allowing the ball to drop in and give the Red Sox a 2-1 lead. Devers then scored on a passed ball for a 3-1 margin.
Devers had nine hits and seven RBIs in the series.
The Red Sox added another run on a dropped ball by right fielder Jay Bruce in the second that let Andrew Benintendi score from first with two outs. The miscues forced Seattle starter Marco Gonzales to labor as he needed 65 pitches to get through the first two innings.
Gonzales (5-2) finished four innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits. He walked three and struck out three.
After Narvaez homered in the top of the fifth, Parker Markel came on in relief for the Mariners in his major league debut and gave up a two-run single to Chavis that gave Boston a 6-2 lead.
Chavis had another two-run single as part of a three-run Boston seventh, and Martinez slugged his second homer, a two-run shot, in the eighth.
Martinez's solo homer got the Red Sox on the board in the first after the Mariners scored in the top of the inning on a sacrifice fly.
Boston starter Hector Velazquez (1-2) pitched a season-high five innings to earn his first win. He gave up two runs on two hits and two walks, striking out three.
