Josh Phegley had a career-high eight RBIs Friday as the visiting Oakland A's broke out of a six-game losing streak in a big way, shellacking the Pittsburgh Pirates 14-1.
Phegley hit a solo homer, two bases-clearing doubles and an RBI single. It was the most RBIs against Pittsburgh since St. Louis' Kenny Reitz had eight June 28, 1977.
Matt Chapman also homered for the A's, who racked up 16 hits.
Pittsburgh had its two-game winning streak snapped and has lost nine of 11.
Oakland starter Brett Anderson (4-2) allowed one run and four hits in six innings, with four strikeouts and two walks, to move past a stretch of three starts where he was 0-2 with a 6.92 ERA.
Pittsburgh starter Joe Musgrove (1-3), who entered the game with the second-lowest ERA among qualifying major league pitchers, lasted 2 2/3 innings, giving up seven runs, five of them earned, and six hits, with one strikeout and two walks. His ERA rose from 1.54 to 2.63.
Adam Frazier led off the Pirates first with a walk and later scored on Josh Bell's fielder's choice for a short-lived 1-0 lead.
Oakland scored five runs in the second. It started with the first of two throwing errors in the inning by third baseman Jung Ho Kang, allowing Khris Davis to reach. Back-to-back singles by Stephen Piscotty and Kendrys Morales loaded the bases. Musgrove hit Jurickson Profar to bring in a run for a 1-1 tie. Phegley followed with a three-run double down the line in left to make it 4-1. Phegley later scored on Marcus Semien's groundout to up it to 5-1.
Phegley's RBI single and a bases-loaded walk to Semien in the third made it 7-1 and chased Musgrove.
Against Nick Kingham in the fourth, Profar hit a bases-loaded single to make it 8-1, and Phegley's second bases-loaded double produced an 11-1 lead.
Chapman's two-run homer to right, his ninth, made it 13-1 in the seventh, and Phegley led off the ninth with his fourth homer.
