Kris Bryant and Willson Contreras homered, and Ben Zobrist broke a tie with a two-run double in a three-run 15th inning as the Chicago Cubs outlasted the Arizona Diamondbacks for a 6-5 victory on Sunday in Phoenix.
Tyler Chatwood, the Cubs' seventh pitcher, doubled to the fence in right-center field with one out in the 15th inning off Matt Andriese (3-2) and took third on Albert Almora Jr.'s single to center.
Zobrist, who entered the game in a double-switch in the 11th inning, doubled into the right field corner and took third on the throw to home, which failed to beat Almora. Bryant followed with a sacrifice fly.
David Peralta singled with two outs in the 15th off Kyle Ryan before Christian Walker doubled, and pinch hitter Caleb Joseph hit a two-run single to make it 6-5. Right-hander Allen Webster entered and got Nick Ahmed to fly out to the warning track in left field for his first career save.
Chatwood (1-0) struck out pinch hitter John Ryan Murphy with the bases loaded in the 13th inning and pitched around a leadoff walk in the 14th for the victory. The game took five hours, 36 minutes.
The Cubs left 15 runners on base, including loading the bases in the 12th and the 14th, and were 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position before Almora and Zobrist had hits in the 15th. Zobrist and Kyle Schwarber had two hits each for the Cubs, who have won nine of 12 and moved two games above .500 for the second time this season.
Arizona left 11 on base and was 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position until Joseph's single.
Eduardo Escobar hit a solo homer in the fourth inning and a two-run shot in the sixth, while Ketel Marte and Walker added two hits apiece for Arizona, which had won 10 of 13.
Bryant hit his third homer of the season with two outs in the third, his second two-run homer in the series, for a 2-0 lead. Contreras hit his seventh homer of the season with two outs in fourth to make it 3-0.
Cubs starter Jose Quintana gave up five hits and three runs, all on Escobar homers, in 5 2/3 innings, with two strikeouts and no walks.
Arizona starter Luke Weaver gave up six hits and three runs in 4 1/3 innings, with five strikeouts and one walk.
