Vince Velasquez combined with four relievers on a six-hit shutout Wednesday night for the visiting Philadelphia Phillies, who blew open a close game by scoring three times in the eighth inning of a 6-0 victory over the New York Mets.
The Phillies, who were outscored 14-1 in losing the first two games of the three-game series, won for just the second time in the last seven games.
Velasquez (1-0) danced around trouble all night and had just one 1-2-3 inning, but he stranded seven baserunners in his five innings, including five in scoring position. The right-hander allowed three hits and three walks while striking out six.
Pat Neshek, Seranthony Dominguez and Adam Morgan each tossed one inning of one-hit relief before Juan Nicasio tossed a perfect ninth in a non-save situation.
The Phillies scored the only run they'd need in the first, when J.T. Realmuto and Bryce Harper had back-to-back doubles.
Philadelphia added insurance runs off Robert Gsellman in the eighth, when Rhys Hoskins laced a leadoff triple and scored on a single by Maikel Franco. Pinch hitter Phil Gosselin's one-out RBI single knocked in Franco, and Roman Quinn followed with a suicide squeeze that scored Cesar Hernandez.
Harper walked leading off the ninth against Jacob Rhame, and Hoskins followed with a two-run homer off Rhame, who angered Hoskins and the rest of the Phillies with a pair of up-and-in pitches at Hoskins in the ninth inning Tuesday night. Hoskins barely jogged during his home run trot, which was clocked at 34 seconds.
Robinson Cano had three hits and drew a walk in four plate appearances for the Mets.
Jason Vargas (1-1) took the loss after allowing one run on three hits and two walks while striking out four over 4 2/3 innings.
