Tommy La Stella hit two home runs, but it was a bases-loaded walk by Jonathan Lucroy that drove in the winning run in the Los Angeles Angels' 11-8 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night in Anaheim, Calif.
It was the Angels' fifth win in a row, but it wasn't easy. The Angels blew a 6-0 first-inning lead and then lost Mike Trout for the game after the third inning because of a strained right groin.
The two-time American League MVP was removed for precautionary reasons, and he likely won't play Wednesday, Los Angeles manager Brad Ausmus said postgame. The Angels list Trout as day-to-day.
The Brewers, thanks in large part to two homers by Yasmani Grandal, rallied to take an 8-7 lead in the fifth before the Angels' bullpen got stingy and the offense rallied to put Los Angeles in position to sweep the series Wednesday.
Lucroy's bases-loaded walk off Brewers reliever Alex Wilson snapped an 8-8 tie in the seventh inning before the Angels added two insurance runs in the eighth. Besides La Stella's big night for Los Angeles, Andrelton Simmons had three hits.
The Angels jumped all over Brewers starter Freddy Peralta early, scoring six runs in the first inning. Trout got the rally started with a one-out single, and Justin Bour followed with a single.
One out later, the Angels got consecutive RBI singles by Albert Pujols, Brian Goodwin and Lucroy for a 3-0 lead. La Stella followed with the first of his two home runs, a three-run blast for a 6-0 Los Angeles lead.
While Peralta settled in after the first, the Brewers' offense started to peck away at Angels starter Matt Harvey.
The Brewers cut their deficit in half with three runs in the second inning, getting an RBI double from Ben Gamel, an RBI single from Hernan Perez and an RBI double from Lorenzo Cain.
Grandal's two-run homer made it 6-5 in the top of the fourth before La Stella's second homer of the night in the bottom of fourth pushed the Angels' lead to 7-5.
Harvey was removed after a one-out walk to Travis Shaw in the fifth, but the Brewers continued to hit. Mike Moustakas tied the game with a two-run homer off Luke Bard, and Grandal followed with his second homer of the night to give Milwaukee its first lead at 8-7.
Cam Bedrosian (1-0) got the win over Alex Claudio (0-1). Cody Allen earned his third save.
