Daniel Palka delivered a game-ending, two-run single to cap a three-run ninth inning Tuesday as the Chicago White Sox rallied for a 5-4 victory over the visiting Cleveland Indians.
Yolmer Sanchez also had an RBI single in the ninth inning as the White Sox finally got to Carlos Carrasco (16-10) after striking out eight times against the right-hander in the previous four innings.
The White Sox won for just the third time in their last nine games and the sixth time in their last 19 games. Ian Hamilton (1-2) recorded the final out of the ninth inning to pick up his first major league victory.
The Indians' Yan Gomes hit a home run, and Trevor Bauer continued to progress in his return from the disabled list in the defeat.
The Indians, who have already clinched the American League Central title, fell to 88-69 while losing for just the third time in their past eight games. Cleveland will face the AL West champion in the AL Division Series.
Bauer went four innings in his second start since returning from a right fibula stress fracture. He threw 60 pitches four days after pitching 1 1/3 innings (34 pitches) against the Red Sox. The right-hander gave up two first-inning runs on five hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
Carrasco pitched 4 1/3 innings in support of Bauer. It was his second relief outing of the season after also replacing Bauer on July 15 at New York against the Yankees.
Gomes went deep in the fourth inning, his 16th homer of the season, to give the Indians a 4-2 lead. It was his 11th home run on the road.
The White Sox jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a two-run home run from Avisail Garcia, his 19th of the season.
The Indians grabbed the lead with a three-run third inning. Jose Ramirez delivered an RBI single off White Sox starter James Shields while Yonder Alonso had a two-run single.
Shields gave up four runs on six hits over six innings, with four walks and six strikeouts. Gomes' home run was the 34th allowed this season by Shields, second most in the AL.
The White Sox (62-95) now need one victory over their final five games to avoid the fourth 100-loss season in franchise history. The White Sox won for just the second time in their past 10 home games.
