Joc Pederson opened the game with a home run, and Manny Machado capped a five-run third inning with a three-run homer Saturday night as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the visiting San Diego Padres 7-2 to retain a 1 1/2-game lead in the National League West.
The second-place Colorado Rockies scored a 5-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday in Phoenix.
Dodgers left-handed starter Rich Hill (10-5) limited the Padres to a solo homer by Hunter Renfroe in the sixth. Hill gave up four hits with no walks while striking out seven in seven innings to become the first Dodger pitcher to win 10 games this season. It was also Hill's longest outing since July 26.
In the ninth, the Padres scored a run on a Manuel Margot single and had the bases loaded with one out when Kenley Jansen entered. The Dodgers closer recorded his 37th save by striking out Cory Spangenberg and Travis Jankowski.
Rookie Padres right-hander Jacob Nix (2-4) gave up six runs on six hits -- including the Pederson and Machado homers -- in 2 1/3 innings.
The Dodgers (86-69) rebounded from a 5-3 loss Friday to the 62-93 Padres, who still need another win to avoid a 100-loss season.
Pederson drove the second pitch of the game from Nix for his 24th homer of the season -- and his seventh game-opening homer.
Chris Taylor opened the Los Angeles third with a single and moved to third on Pederson's double after Hill struck out. Both Taylor and Pederson scored on Justin Turner's double. After Nix hit Max Muncy with a pitch, Machado connected on his 36th homer of the season and his 12th as a Dodger.
Yasmani Grandal belted a solo homer off Brad Wieck in the sixth, his 24th of the season. It was also the franchise-record 222nd home run hit by the Dodgers this season.
Padres rookie right fielder Franmil Reyes went 0-for-4 to see his 12-game hitting streak end.
Pederson and Taylor each had two hits for the Dodgers. Renfroe, Wil Myers and Spangenberg had two hits for the Padres.
