Paul Goldschmidt hit a two-run homer in the first and Steven Souza Jr. added a three-run double in the sixth as the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the San Diego Padres 9-4 at Petco Park on Friday to maintain their 1 1/2-game lead on Colorado in the National League West.
The Diamondbacks' second straight win of the series ran their record at Petco Park to 5-0 this season. The Padres lost a fifth straight game.
Right-handed reliever Yoshihisa Hirano (4-2) was credited with the win as Arizona starter Robbie Ray failed to complete five innings while holding the lead against the Padres for the second time this season. Left-handed rookie starter Joey Lucchesi (6-7) took the loss.
For the second straight night, Arizona struck for multiple runs in the first.
Eduardo Escobar drew a one-out walk and came around when Goldschmidt drove the first pitch he saw from Lucchesi 396 feet into the left field seats. The Padres got one of the runs back in the bottom of the first when Ray walked the first two hitters he faced, with Jose Pirela scoring after a pair of groundouts.
Arizona added two runs in the second on RBI singles by Jeff Mathis and Ray, made it 5-2 in the fourth on A.J. Pollock's RBI grounder and broke the game open on Souza's three-run double in the sixth. Escobar homered for the Diamondbacks' final run in the eighth.
The Padres' second and third runs came on an Eric Hosmer single in the third and the first baseman's 12th homer of the season in the fifth. Manuel Margot homered in the bottom of the eighth.
Goldschmidt reached base in all five plate appearances, going 2-for-2 with a homer and three walks. Escobar reached four times, going 2-for-3 with his homer, two walks and three runs scored. Souza was 3-for-5. Jon Jay had two hits and scored twice.
Ray allowed three runs on two hits and five walks with three strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings. Lucchesi allowed five runs on nine hits and three walks with six strikeouts in four innings.
