Robinson Chirinos hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the fourth inning Monday night and added an insurance run with an RBI single in the eighth inning as the host Texas Rangers beat the Arizona Diamondbacks, 5-3, in the opener of a two-game series at Globe Life Park.
The Rangers snapped a two-game losing streak. The Diamondbacks, who entered Monday with a one-game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West, have lost three of four.
The Diamondbacks jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first on RBI doubles by A.J. Pollock and Steven Souza Jr. against Bartolo Colon (7-10).
Texas' Ronald Guzman led off the third by homering off Zack Greinke (12-8) to cut the gap in half before the Rangers took the lead in the fourth, when Elvis Andrus led off with a single and went to second on Adrian Beltre's groundout. After Joey Gallo walked, Chirinos launched his homer to left-center.
David Peralta's two-out RBI single in the fifth pulled the Diamondbacks within one, but Colon ended his night by getting Paul Goldschmidt to pop out.
Eddie Butler tossed two perfect innings in relief of Colon, and then Cory Gearrin wriggled out of a two-on, two-out jam in the eighth before Chirinos collected his fourth RBI - his most in a game since he had five RBIs on Apr. 14, 2015.
Jose Leclerc then threw a 1-2-3 ninth for his second save.
Guzman also had two hits for the Rangers. He has four homers in his last three starts.
Colon allowed three runs on four hits and one walk while striking out three.
The win was the 247th of Colon's career, which moved him into a tie with Jack Quinn for 49th all-time. Colon became the all-time winningest Latin-born pitcher with his previous victory, which broke a tie with Dennis Martinez.
Pollock and Goldschmidt had two hits each for the Diamondbacks.
Greinke allowed four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out six over 6 1/3 innings.
