Nick Markakis capped a four-hit day by homering with one out in the 10th inning Sunday afternoon as the visiting Atlanta Braves came back from an early three-run deficit to edge the New York Mets 5-4 at Citi Field.
The Braves took three of four from the Mets. Atlanta entered Sunday 1 1/2 games behind the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League East and a half-game ahead of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the race for the second wild card.
The Mets have lost seven of nine.
Markakis' one-out homer off Tyler Bashlor (0-1) landed well beyond the fence in right-center field. It was the 13th homer of the season for Markakis, who singled in the first, sixth and eighth and finished 4-for-5 to raise his average to .319. He entered Sunday fourth in the NL in the batting race.
The homer made a winner out of A.J. Minter (4-2), who was saddled with his first blown save when he gave up a one-out homer to Devin Mesoraco in the ninth. Jesse Biddle earned his first career save by getting out of trouble in a scoreless 10th. Wilmer Flores hit a leadoff double and went to third on a groundout by Michael Conforto but was stranded as Biddle retired Jose Bautista and Todd Frazier on grounders.
The teams traded runs in the ninth, when Ronald Acuna Jr. gave the Braves their first lead with a two-out RBI single before Mesoraco tied the game by hitting a game-tying homer.
The Mets jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to an RBI single by Flores in the first, a run-scoring double by Jeff McNeil in the third and a homer by Austin Jackson in the fourth.
Starting pitcher Julio Teheran began the Braves' comeback in the fifth by hitting his first major league homer. Atlanta tied the game in the seventh when Johan Camargo singled and scored on Ender Inciarte's two-run homer.
Inciarte had three hits and scored two runs, including the go-ahead run in the ninth.
Flores had three hits for the Mets while Conforto had two hits and Amed Rosario scored two runs.
Teheran allowed three runs on five hits and four walks while striking out six over 5 2/3 innings. Mets starter Corey Oswalt gave up three runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out four over six-plus innings.
