The Mets snapped a seven-game losing streak and improved to 5-18 in June. The Pirates have lost six of seven.

Michael Conforto led off the 10th by drawing a walk against Steven Brault (5-2). Todd Frazier followed with a single before Asdrubal Cabrera's bunt was caught by Brault. Flores then hit Brault's second pitch just fair down the third base line for his third walk-off hit of the season and ninth of his career, tying the team record.

The hit made a winner out of Tim Peterson (1-0), who threw just five pitches in a perfect 10th inning, and capped an eventful afternoon and night at Citi Field.

Mets general manager Sandy Alderson announced during a pregame press conference that he is taking an indefinite leave of absence to fight a recurrence of cancer, which was first diagnosed in 2015. Assistants John Ricco, J.P. Ricciardi and Omar Minaya will run the team in Alderson's absence.

The game featured a brief flirtation with a no-hitter by Steven Matz, who faced the minimum through four innings, and an early exit by Pirates starter Chad Kuhl, who left after the fourth due to right forearm tightness.

There was also a bench-clearing incident in the eighth after Cabrera, the Mets' second baseman, had to jump to avoid the slide of the Pirates' Josh Harrison on a force play.

New York pitcher Jeurys Familia began barking at Harrison and both dugouts and bullpens emptied, though no punches were thrown and Cabrera was seen hugging Harrison while shortstop Jose Reyes patted him on the backside.

The Mets jumped out to a 2-0 lead on Flores' two-run single in the first. The Pirates tied the game in the fifth, when they opened the inning by stringing together their first four hits, including back-to-back RBI singles by Jose Osuna and Gregory Polanco.

The teams traded homers in the seventh, when Polanco went deep with two outs in the top of the inning before Conforto hit a blast with two outs in the bottom half.

Matz allowed three runs on six hits and no walks while striking out seven over seven innings.

Kuhl gave up two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out four.
