Seth Lugo continued his breakout season by tossing six scoreless innings in a spot start, and Todd Frazier hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning as the New York Mets snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 2-0 win over the New York Yankees at Citi Field.
By winning the finale of a nine-game homestand, the Mets avoided the second 0-9 homestand in franchise history. They scored just 13 runs in the nine games.
The Yankees, who were shut out for the first time this season, lost for only the second time in 11 games.
Lugo (2-1), pitching in place of injured Noah Syndergaard, allowed only two hits and walked none while tying a career high with eight strikeouts. He has tossed 13 consecutive scoreless innings in his past three outings (two starts and one relief appearance) and has allowed three runs in his past 28 1/3 innings dating back to May 1.
Lugo appeared primed to become the latest Mets starter to go unrewarded for his strong effort -- Mets starters were 0-3 with a 2.34 ERA during the losing streak -- before Jose Reyes singled with two outs in the fifth and Frazier followed with a homer to left.
Lugo and Robert Gsellman combined to retire 17 in a row between the second and eighth innings. In the eighth, Miguel Andujar singled with one out and pinch hitter Aaron Judge reached on a double error by Reyes, who didn't touch second base while trying to force Andujar before he threw wide of first base. However, Gsellman retired Gleyber Torres on a popup and induced Brett Gardner to fly out to the track in left.
Anthony Swarzak tossed a hitless ninth for his first save. He walked Greg Bird with one out but got Gary Sanchez to line into a double play.
Frazier and Andujar each had two hits.
Luis Severino (9-2) had his seven-decision winning streak snapped. He gave up the two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out seven over five innings.
Mets second baseman Asdrubal Cabrera left following the third inning due to a tight left hamstring.
