Rays 5, Rangers 4: James Loney delivered a go-ahead, two-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning and Grant Balfour shut down visiting Texas in the ninth to lift Tampa Bay.
Loney added another double and walked twice while Matt Joyce hit a two-run homer for the Rays, who improved to 4-2 after taking their second straight game from the Rangers. Tampa Bay starter David Price allowed four runs and nine hits before Jake McGee and Brandon Gomes (1-0) bridged the gap leading to Balfour’s first save.
Rangers starter Nick Martinez was solid in his major-league debut, allowing three runs and four hits in six innings but the bullpen was unable to close out the win. Elvis Andrus and Josh Wilson each delivered three hits and scored a run for Texas.
The Rangers got to Price early, scoring two runs in the first on a two-out, two-run double by Alex Rios after Shin-Soo Choo and Andrus led off with singles. Price struggled to get the final out in the second as well as Andrus knocked in Wilson with a single to left for a 3-0 lead.
Yunel Escobar homered to start the third for Tampa Bay and after Texas added a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly, Joyce smacked a two-run homer in the bottom half to trim the deficit to 4-3. Neal Cotts (0-1) relieved Jason Frasor to start the eighth and walked two of the first three batters he faced before Loney came up with his big hit.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Rays announced before the game that Escobar agreed to a two-year contract extension for 2015 and 2016 that's worth a guaranteed $13 million with a club option for 2017. … Martinez is the first Texas pitcher to throw six innings or more and allow three hits or less in his major-league debut since Roger Pavlik in May 1992. … Tampa Bay pitchers have not allowed a walk in the last 12 innings.
