Giants 6, Phillies 5: Rookie Joe Panik went 2-for-3 and scored the go-ahead run on Gregor Blanco’s RBI single in the eighth inning as host San Francisco overcame a huge deficit to even its three-game set with Philadelphia.
After contributing an RBI single during a four-run rally in the sixth to knot it at 5-5, Panik opened the eighth with his first career triple off Antonio Bastardo (5-7). Jake Diekman came on in relief and promptly surrendered Blanco’s grounder past shortstop Jimmy Rollins two pitches later.
Jeremy Affeldt (3-1) came on in the eighth and retired four of the five batters he faced before Sergio Romo got the final two outs for his 23rd save as the Giants closed to within 4 1/2 games of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West and moved one-half game ahead of Pittsburgh for the NL’s second wild-card spot. Ben Revere had his fifth four-hit game of the season and Ryan Howard went 3-for-5 with three RBIs for the Phillies, who fell for the sixth time in eight contests.
Hunter Pence gave San Francisco the early advantage two batters into the game when he drove Kyle Kendrick’s 2-1 sinker into the stands in left-center, but the right-hander quickly rebounded to retire 12 of the next 15 batters following Michael Morse’s triple to lead off the second. Howard evened the score in the third with a line-drive RBI single to right and Philadelphia took the lead moments later on Marlon Byrd’s sacrifice fly.
Howard’s two-run single capped a three-run fifth as the Phillies made it 5-1, but the Phillies gave it all back in the sixth as Morse doubled in a run to end Kendrick’s outing. Following a walk to Adam Duvall, Panik and Blanco followed with run-scoring singles off reliever Mario Hollands before Angel Pagan knotted it with a sacrifice fly.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Kendrick, who is 1-2 with an 8.31 ERA over his last four road starts, yielded four runs (three earned) on five hits in five-plus frames while Giants starter Tim Hudson was tagged for five runs on eight hits in four-plus innings. … Panik is batting .372 in 12 August games. … The Giants won for only the ninth time in their last 32 home games after beginning the season with a 22-9 record at AT&T Park.
