Phillies 7, Mets 6: Ryan Howard delivered a walk-off single as Philadelphia stormed back to stun visiting New York.
The Mets brought in closer Jenrry Mejia (5-5) with a 6-5 lead in the ninth inning and Cody Asche led off with a double before Marlon Byrd came on as a pinch hitter and delivered a tying RBI single to center. Mejia retired the next two but elected to intentionally put Chase Utley on base after Byrd stole second, leaving Howard to lace a single down the right-field line for the winning run.
Utley finished a double shy of the cycle with three RBIs and Domonic Brown drove in a pair for the Phillies, who trailed 6-1 before mounting a comeback in the sixth. Ken Giles (1-0) earned the win in relief as the Philadelphia bullpen turned in four scoreless innings.
David Wright’s run-scoring single in the first gave New York a quick lead, but Utley struck back in the bottom of the frame with his 11th home run. The Mets took the lead again on Daniel Murphy’s sacrifice fly in the second and made it 4-1 in the third when Juan Lagares came up with two on and two out and sent a drive off the top of the wall in right for a triple.
Lucas Duda sent his 21st home run out to center to lead off the fifth and Travis d’Arnaud ripped the next pitch out to left to extend the advantage to 6-1. Philadelphia made things interesting with two runs on Brown’s double in the sixth and drew within a run when Utley sent a two-run triple to right in the seventh.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Mets rookie RHP Jacob deGrom (shoulder) will head back to New York on Monday for tests and will not make his scheduled start on Tuesday. … The Phillies claimed veteran RHP Jerome Williams off waivers from the Texas Rangers and designated RHP Sean O’Sullivan for assignment. … Wright finished with two hits and has hit safely in nine straight games.
