Angels 4, Yankees 1: Los Angeles scored three runs in the eighth inning on six walks and Jered Weaver tossed eight strong innings to help the Angels edge visiting New York in the opener of a three-game series.

Weaver (3-2) yielded one run while striking out seven and Ernesto Frieri worked a perfect ninth for his third save and first since April 21. The Angels sent nine batters to the plate in the eighth and scored three times without recording a hit while three New York relievers issued six walks, including four in a row by Shawn Kelley (0-2), who was ejected by umpire Laz Diaz while leaving the field.

The Angels moved ahead in the fifth when Howie Kendrick hit a leadoff triple and scored on Ian Stewart’s groundout against David Phelps, who allowed three hits over 5 1/3 innings in his first start since July 4, 2013. Albert Pujols had two hits for Los Angeles, which bounced back from Sunday’s 14-3 loss to Texas.

Derek Jeter helped New York tie the game in the seventh when he snapped an 0-for-14 slump with a leadoff double off Weaver, who improved to 7-4 in 14 career starts against New York. Jeter, whose double was his first extra-base hit in 55 at-bats, moved to third on Jacoby Ellsbury’s groundout and scored easily on Mark Teixeira’s single to right field.

The Yankees’ first three batters singled in the eighth, but Weaver escaped the jam by striking out Brett Gardner and inducing Jeter to ground into an inning-ending double play. Yankees manager Joe Girardi was ejected during Gardner’s at-bat by Diaz after a heated argument over balls and strikes.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Yankees walked six batters in an inning for the first time since Sept. 12, 1990 against Texas. … The Angels optioned INF Luis Jimenez to Triple-A Salt Lake and recalled RHP Cory Rasmus. … The Yankees unsuccessfully challenged a call in the sixth inning after the Angels’ SS Erick Aybar was called safe on a close play at third base.
